Why Ben Franklin?

We choose Benjamin Franklin, world renowned statesmen, inventor, scientist & philosopher, as an inspirational guide star for our company and feature him in our logo. Did you know he is also credited with inventing bifocals, which he call his "focusers"?

Like many men who have presbyopia, Franklin had trouble reading and seeing clearly objects that were up close. Being a scientist and inventor, Franklin solved his problem by cutting the lenses of two pairs of spectacles, preserving "half of each kind associated in the same circle." Thus he could "move my eyes up or down, as I want to see distinctly far and near." Franklin wrote in August 1784 that he was "happy in the invention of double spectacles, which serving for distant objects as well as near ones, make my eyes as useful to me as ever they were."

We modeled one of our original frames – the Windsors – after Ben's frames. And we named our company Focusers because we hope to be as inventive and innovative as Ben, and provide expertly prepared lenses in beautifully designed frames that our customers will enjoy for years.
